New skill: Player Potential

Post by FTP-ashario » Wed Oct 24, 2012 1:19 am

What is potential?
Potential is a number between 0 and 10 that affects the training speed of a player. The higher the number, the faster a player trains. Each level of potential increases training speed by roughly 5%. Potential is a fixed, untrainable skill.

When is it being implemented?
At the end of this season all players will be allocated a potential of between 4 and 6. Steps will be taken to ensure that potential values are allocated fairly an evenly for each squad.
Any players created after the end of the season (either created through new teams or via youth pulls) will be allocated a potential of between 0 and 10.

Please Note: On 2/11/12 A decision was made to delay the implementation of potential until futher notice.

Is there a transition phase?
Yes. For the first season, each level of potential will increase training speed by only 1%. This will increase by 1% each season for the next 4 seasons.

Why is potential being introduced?
Some of the reasons include:
- There is an innate sameness about many of the players currently in the game and the maximum skill level they can attain. Not only that, but there is a very large supply of highly skilled players. I'd like to see more differentiation in player skill so the proportion of exceptional+ players is reduced (and consequently the propertion of high wage players is also reduced)
- It is very difficult to train a truly world class allrounder. Players with very high potential (9 or 10) could possibly be trained into an Imran Khan or Ian Botham.
- Older, high skilled players will be worth more on the transfer market as they will be less common. The current practice of new teams being able to rapidly buy a squad of 28yo+ exceptional primary players would be a thing of the past.
- It will be more difficult for new managers to go out and purchase a squad with unsustainable wages (fewer high wage players would exist, hence their transfer prices should be much higher than now)
- Younger players will have a higher chance of breaking into the senior 1st XI (eg a high potential 22yo might be of the same skill as a lower potential 25yo)
- It will add a bit more variety to youth pulls.

More info
- The bulk of players (perhaps about two thirds) will have a potential of 4-6
- Probably about 2% of players will have a potential of 9 or 10 (similar for 0 and 1)
- The current training speed of players maps to a potential of 7 (so a player with a potential of 5 will train 10% slower than today's players)
- Having a high youth academy will slightly increase the chance of pulling a youth with high potential
