PSL 12 Round 1: Ratings in Review

Hello everyone! Your beloved and highly-regarded match referee returns with a quick wrap up of how clubs fared when it comes to staying within the ratings limits for each category. How often have we seen rounds being decided based on overturned results when ratings come into play? As such, ratings management is one of the key factors of the PSL.

In round 1, most teams did a good job with the ratings. However, we did have a couple of slip ups and both were significant in terms of the round result. Here is the overview (Platinum and YOD 1 not included as they are 'free' categories):




Dera Ghazi Khan Stars v Faisalabad Falcons:

The Stars and the Falcons found themselves in a bit of a slog fest in the first round. With each punch and counter-punch, the round seemed to be heading towards a tie. However, an overrating in the 'Gold' contest derailed the Stars' effort.

Gold: Married Eleven (nadeemkhan) vs Walking Champ (MrMoose)
The DGKS captain's club Married Eleven put in a clinical performance in their opener against Walking Champ. They batted well and bowled brilliantly. The victory celebrations were well underway when reality hit, bringing the honey moon phase to a screeching halt. They had overrated by more than 9k (234,040). And all that remained was misery...

Rawalpindi Rapids v Multan Sultans

Although it was a well fought round between the two franchises, the Rapids had been one step ahead until an overrating in the 'Diamond' contest handed the advantage over to the Sultans.

Diamond: Caterham Crusaders (Bustergut) vs Indian Capers (drag0on)
Caterham Crusaders is a key team for the Rapids- and showed why in their opener. In overcast conditions, they put in a dominant performance with both the bat and the ball. However, not quite so with the calculator. They just went over the limit (251,246), handing the win to the Capers and the round lead to the Sultans. Rumor has it that later at night the Rapids' captain was spotted in a secluded corner of the stadium, banging his head against the wall. He was not disturbed.

Well, that does it for round 1. Although we only had two instances of overrating, both had a major effect on the final result. It shows how franchises can not afford to get complacent when it comes to ensuring discipline in managing ratings. As we get into the latter stages of the league and teams try and hit their ceilings, it will become even more crucial.

The Sultans are the only Franchise 2/2.

DGKS Vs MS

Illawarra Dragons (Platinum), Wolfberries Too (Gold) and MUK CC (Silver) all going into their third fixtures without a loss. All other teams across both franchises have had at least one loss in their two matches to date.

Illawarra and Wolfberries continue their winning ways (MUK CC yet to play) and Multan Sultans have wrapped up the fixture 5-0 with 2 matches yet to finish.

KK's dominant round 1 means they have at least three sides undefeated in the tournament in Amsterdammer (Diamond), Riddlers (YOD 1) and Shahzaday (YOD2).

Berkshire CCC and Walking Champ (admittedly only on a technicality) are the two undefeated sides for FF.

Amsterdammer and riddlers both had their first losses for the tournament, whilst Berkshire and Walking Champ continued their winning ways. The chocolates have been split 3-3 so far. It's a Captain Vs Captain shootout with the undefeated Shahzaday taking on the mighty Falcons.

PSL 12 Round 2: Ratings in Review

Welcome one! Welcome all! We have another wrap up of how the ratings fared brought to you by the PSL's greatest (and only) match referee. In round 2, teams were able to keep a lock on their ratings- at least for the most part. We did have a couple of instances of going over once again. Still, it is good to see teams realizing the importance of ratings management in the context of the final result. Either that or they're finally using calculators rather than the TV remote (don't ask).

Rawalpindi Rapids v Dera Ghazi Khan Stars:

This round, both instances of overrating involved a team representing the Dera Ghazi Khan Stars franchise. There will have to be a talk on discipline when it comes to the ratings management aspect by the think tank. The only solace that they can take is that unlike round 1, the overrating this round did not have an effect on the match results.

Diamond: Caterham Crusaders (Bustergut) vs Hereford Hawks (RevRob)
Caterham Crusaders won comfortably last round but overrated. Result: grief, frustration and annoyance. Caterham Crusaders won comfortably this round and didn't overrate. Result: happiness, joy and general merriment. Clearly, ratings management when done properly is good for the health. Someone should have told the Hawks. They overrated (251,309) but lost the match anyway.

Gold: Rainworth Cricket Club (Snowy83) vs Married Eleven (nadeemkhan)
Once again DGKS' most difficult contest remained their captain's battle against his own ratings. Married Eleven 0, Ratings 2. Perhaps round 3 will be different? The captain will certainly be hoping so- leading from the front and all...

Well, that's round 2 done and dusted. Overall, another decent week when it comes to ratings management. Although we did have two instances of teams slipping up, neither had an effect on the round itself. However, as the competition heats up, further cracks may appear. It will be interesting to see whether the franchises can stay on top of things while looking towards securing a place in the final.

Only one of the 3 PSL Fixtures have been concluded with Multan Sultans continuing their dominance wrapping up their fixture against DGKZ with it currently 5-0 with 2 matches yet to be finished.

The other two fixtures are both currently drawn. QG and RR both have one win and it will come down to who can win at least two the three matches remaining.

KK vs FF has come down to a captain vs captain shootout to decide the fixture.
