Season 39 Youth Pulls Bragging/Training Advice/Etc..

Postby desert7 » Mon Oct 15, 2018 8:06 pm

Don't forget to pull your WI's youths every week. We need all the good pulls we can get. WI's has a smallish community of youth recruiters, but the upside is your pulls are more likely to make U19 squad than in many countries...

Post your pulls in this thread to brag about gooduns, lament on rubbish, ask for training advice, etc :thumbsup

Good question Wilkesy93

There are realistic reasons for considering going the bowler route with 2 bowling talents. We don't have too much in the way of FM bowlers so far and he is a 4th week pull (still early) - he could be rel/rel bowler (with 2 bowling talents) with reas batting and average+ endurance/fielding and ord+ power19yo EOS. Against that is he could be a very good batsmen maybe acc/acc with same secondaries (but no relevant talents). Many would go batting route, but the talents do raise an interesting question for sure...

The best thing for now is to train fielding to reasonable and then reassess in 5/6 weeks time, according to West Indies u19 (& your) preferences...

Excellent pull DJ :clap

He'll make a great batsmen with the talents and power. Take fielding to capable/reliable (in his case) first of all, just in case we did want him to go bowl/AR route later, but I can't see that TBH. Technique maybe not high enough to go AR/KB route really. TBH we'll probably want him to be 4th or 5th place bat and also captain. With captaincy in mind I'd make sure he gets to reasonable endurance by first tour as 19yo (he may do that without much endurance training anyway), ideally capable. He has 4k spare. This guy could make squad as an 18yo and maybe even tour. Make sure he gets plenty of games ASAP - he could be huge with experience...

Thanks for advice. I have him playing Youth and Senior ODI at the moment, to build his experience. Right now he is training fielding - will do so until capable, and depending on pops at that time carry onto reliable. I have a Deluxe academy, so I'm hoping this guy will be a monster. Will keep in touch.

Friendly Regards,

DJ

Sounds good DJ :)

Thinking again, fielding to capable will be absolutely fine maybe even just reasonable for now(certainly until he is 18), endurance is the main secondary focus with him after that. Because he's very likely to captain (at least as a 19yo) endurance should certainly be worked on as an 18yo/19yo to at least reas before taking fielding any higher than capable. Batting & tech need to be at least reliable though before thinking about endurance...

So in short maybe for now just take fielding to reasonable/capable, then work on bat tech/bat until he's early 18yo or so and then review after that. Just had a look at 17yo bats, maybe it's asking a lot of him making u19 squad in first half of his 18yo season TBH, but he won't be far away after that...

What I'm looking for is advice on whether to make him a batsman or a bowler, obviously he's a better batsman currently but is it a waste to not use a left arm wrist spinner?

A very good question Wilkesy93 and TBH a tough one to answer :think

As a bat he could be very big in terms of primaries, but he needs at least 9 (maybe 15+) weeks to correct obvious endurance/power deficiencies. Bats without ord/ave power can be significantly less effective at youth level. As a spin bowler power is less important (dreadful/poor OK, though higher can give benefit). Given his bowl summary is poor already and he is a LWS theres certainly a significant case for going spin bowl route, though many would go bat route. As a spin bowler he could be rel+/acc with some bat (that would be u19 level some seasons). Only you can decide, but he will be at least a very good club player whichever path you go...

He needs to be put on remedial endurance training until EOS, whichever way you go IMO. Fielding is fine as is...

TBH I wouldn't worry about it from an u19 point of view too much. DJ's pull Kerry Nelson (posted just before yours) is also a lws who will probably be a higher level. We also have a huge rws and several other possible WS 16yo...
