Match Engine Changes: EOS 7

Post by FTP-ashario » Wed Oct 07, 2009 5:07 am

At the conclusion of the U-19 World Cup, the following match engine changes will be implemented

Increased RPO for 'occassional' bowlers
The formulae used to calculate the number of runs per over bowlers concede has been modified slightly, so that bowlers that are significantly less skilled than the batsmen they are bowling to will concede slightly more runs per over.

For example, a reasonable summary bowler bowling to an expert summary batsmen will be slightly more expensive than previously.

Opening with spinners
Spinners opening the bowling will concede slightly more runs per over than previously

Bowler variety - spin heavy attacks
Teams playing a high proportion of spinners (eg 7 or more spells out of 10) will receive a slightly smaller 'bowler variety' bonus than previously.

The combination of the "Opening with spinners" and "Bowler variety - spin heavy attacks" changes will make the tactic of playing an all-spin attack in spin-friendly conditions somewhat less effective.

Chance of multiple runouts
The chance of more than one runout occuring in an innings has been decreased slightly. We should see slightly fewer innings with two runouts. We should see considerably fewer innings with three or more runouts.

'Excess technique and power for batsmen
There is a 'diminishing returns' effect when calculating the contribution of technique and power over and above a player's batting level. This effect has been reduced slightly.
For example
- an ordinary batsmen with reliable technique will be slightly better at defending his wicket than previously.
- an ordinary batsmen with reliable power will be slightly better at scoring runs than previously.
- a reliable batsmen with outstanding technique will be slightly better at defending his wicket than previously.
- a reliable batsmen with outstanding power will be slightly better at scoring runs than previously.

This change should make the typical tailender a little more likely to survive and/or score runs than previously. It should also increase the effectiveness of 'specialist' batsmen (eg a T20 specialist with high power, or a OD 'defensive' specialist with high technique).
