Whats the difference between T20 & OD squads?

Post by boscorp » Sat Jan 13, 2024 4:03 am

Is fielding more important for one format over the other? Does a bigger gap between technique and a primary skill play a part? Power & endurance?
Is there any difference in the skills that suit one format best?
Or is it all about tactics?
I had always thought endurance for OD and power for T20 but aren't so sure now. Whats other managers thoughts on this?

I was always of the same mindset as you, for bats at least that power was more crucial for T20.

Yeah, I've read that power has an impact but i am yet to observe a noticeable difference.
To me the only difference is the number of overs. Same ball. Commentary is similar, talents are identical even including old ball and new ball bowler(just scaled down from 50 to 20).
Hopefully if any other match variations come along such as a longer version it will require a slightly varied type of cricketer to make it more than just managing fatigue amongst your squad.

Bowling talents trigger at the same rate in SOD as T20.

So with a T20 with a higher run rate and less dot balls, I would consider boundary hitter and accumulator to be more useful in the longer format.

I would probably say the same about bowling trigger talents as well. Same trigger rate means less chances for it to trigger when a bowler only has 4 overs.

In T20 I consider Old Ball Bowler to be far more valuable as a talent, mostly because they are almost guaranteed to be actually using it where in SOD they might not last the entire 50 overs.

Fielding is probably more important in the longer format as well. A dropped catch in SOD could be punished by the batter staying in for another 20 overs. Also accumulative misfields add up more over a longer period of time.

I dunno that's just my thinking.

For me fielding is less important in T20 while power is more important, but I wouldn't say by much IMHO.

I've come to the conclusion that endurance is very important in the longer format, I've now started to make a concerted effort to pick players with high endurance.
