Australian Under 20 OD 1 Wrap Up

Post by sonofcoco » Mon Jan 25, 2021 11:50 am

Where do broken hearts go
Can they find their way home
Back to the open arms
Of a love that's waiting there
And if somebody loves you
Won't they always love you
I look in your eyes
And I know that you still care, for me

Sadly, the Australian Under 20 team’s time in One Day 1 has finished a lot like Whitney Houston’s seminal classic ‘Where Do Broken Hearts Go’…with a lot of unanswered questions and misplaced surety.

In short, the team underperformed this week, and the result was a demotion to One Day 2 for the next iteration of the Under 20 ODs. In due time there will, of course, be full review undertaken into the team’s performance, but while that is being planned, our coach got together with the team psychic – Krystal Balls – the day after the game to debrief, and she has basically said we had too many Aries and Leos in our team and that we made a major error in choosing to bowl in the first match when the moon was in our anus. Ryan O’Keefe, grandson of rock legend Johnny O’Keefe, would disagree having taken 5/51 in the West Indies inning of 222. However, after a promising opening stand of 87, we lost our last 8 wickets for 60 runs to fall 36 runs short of the Windies in match no.1.

Match 2 saw us up against the old enemy – England…in England. You don’t get a much tougher task than this. Typically, the conditions are bowler friendly. Not spin bowler friendly, but friendly none-the-less. To add to this, the condition of the local’s teeth makes it hard to pick out the boundary as there are pickets everywhere. As it was, England racked up 242 and again Australia started reasonably well with the bat. However, from 4 for 185 we lost the last 6 wickets for 20 runs to fall 37 runs short of the required total. With almost 8 overs left in the game it’s fair to say team coach – Juss Tinlanger – was absolutely ropable. As he trudged off to the team bus he could be heard muttering to himself about Elite Preparation, Elite Accountability, and Elite ****wittery.

Our first win came in Game 3. Hamish ‘The Hammer’ Kallady and Pinky Beecroft’s son, Antonio 'Pinky Beecroft's Son' Beecroft, were the main destroyers in Bangladesh’s first innings of 208 with 4/43 and 3/34 respectively. Australia’s opener’s took the run chase on beautifully, with the first wicket falling a run short of the required total when Brodie ‘The Phallus’ Challis departed for a beautifully compiled 119. A dominating performance for our first win, and surely a sign that we were going to cruise through the last two matches in top form.

The morning of game 4 broke spectacularly with a show of sunlight that only South London can produce*. The lads were planning on hitting The London Eye before the match, but as half the team woke up late, they decided to amuse themselves by doing circles around Bremner’s Browneye instead. To explain, allrounder Grant Bremner, a notoriously heavy sleeper, was still catching some shut eye when the rest of the team had woken up. Unfortunately for him, the back of his pyjamas had slid down a little during the night, and on hearing this, the team gathered in his room with cardboard boxes they’d cut leg holes in and proceeded to circle him for half an hour until he woke up. This little team bonding session proved the catalyst for another good team performance against Bermuda. Bremmers was furious and unleashed the beast on his way to 73. In reply, Bermuda pulled up 13 runs short of our total. British comedy duo, Lugg and Nobes, took 3 wickets each.

* Once a month on average according to The British Meteorological Department.

Our last game was against our southern hemisphere neighbours – New Zealand. I wish I could say it was Fiji because that’s a game we would have probably won, but unfortunately the jandal-wearing, chilly bin-utilising buggers from across the pond defeated us handily by 28 runs. Just so you know…I wrote all of this out in a New Zealand accent before returning it to its normal form. Some habits die hard. Wickets were hard to come by in this match for our boys. Beecroft, Lade and Vanko took 2 apiece as NZ lost 6 while amassing 226. Special mention goes to bagless vacuum cleaner heir, Reuben 'V11' Dyson, for his well-compiled 84. In reply, a third wicket stand of almost a hundred by Bob ‘Amy’ Adams and Eddie ‘Peter’ Brock put us in a position to think of a win with 25 overs left, however our mid-lower order again fell in a heap, and we ended up 28 runs short. Not a great finish to the week, but as they say in the classics – stuff shut.

So, that’s the way it went for the Aussie Under 20 team this week. The future holds some intense navel-gazing, a PowerPoint presentation, a lot of buzzwords, the need for some ‘blue-sky thinking’, and a light at the end of a tunnel. If you want to join us on the journey to our next destination, team communications director – Wobbsy – will be putting regular updates on YouTube. You can also tune into the team’s podcast where they discuss team preparation, nicknames, pet hates, pets, favourite songs, favourite jokes, most-hated teammate, least-hated teammate, best rig in the shower, smallest member (of the team) and so on. It’s not to be missed, so we hope to see you there.

Had my first decent pull in a long time. In lieu of a useful talent will go for a bowler (handy number 8 batting, pop it to reas hopefully with good subs).

Keeper bat or all rounder? How should I train him?

If you need a keeper I would go that way to make the best use of skills and talent

Use Keep-bat training for 4-5 pops in keeping then re-assess
