The higher the academy the better players improve with training, so it will help to slow down the plops that you train the skills in.

So plops aren’t a random event but instead are when a skill lowers below its baseline?

That is correct, they used to be random but that changed a few seasons ago.

There is still a minor random element but yes, now you can roughly track skill declines to the point where you'll probably be no more than a week off either way predicting when the player will plop.

Prior to a change that was made a few seasons ago, players aged 30 and over would randomly drop by significant amounts at a time (about half a level depending on age, doubled for endurance) but that is no longer the case.
