Re: [U20] Announcements
Hello, my name is UtopiaRay, and I am an assistant manager with the Bangladesh U20s.
Yesterday was Game 5 vs Canada in Crumbling/Windy conditions - and we entered the game with our destiny not entirely in our own hands. In order to stay in Division 1, we needed to beat Canada and hope NZ lost to Australia, and that the combined margin of our win & their loss (if we batted first & NZ batted second) was 87-88 runs.
Canada won the toss and batted first, but after a 67 run opening partnership it all went pear-shaped for the Canadians, and we rolled them for 178 in 47.3 overs. Seamer Nazmus Alam cleaned them up at the death, picking up 4/36 off his 8.3 overs, benefiting off the pressure built in the middle overs by the spinners (chiefly Madan Nayak, with 1/17 off his 9 overs). I mentioned earlier about the combined margin of victory/defeat for us & the NZ game - because we're batting 2nd now, we had to chase this total with at least 4 overs to spare (and have NZ lose by 70+ runs).
Our innings did not start as strongly, losing opener Manu Vatuvei at the end of the 4th over. Unfortunately, this set the theme for the rest of our batting performance - consolidate after losing a wicket, the batters get comfortable and begin to accelerate, both batters immediately get out. Wicketkeeper Rohit Gavaskar was our top scorer with 33 off 67 as we slumped to 148 all out off 41.3 overs, and lost by 31 runs. The Aussies had done us a favour and beaten NZ by 111 runs, but ultimately it didn't matter as we had to win this game to avoid relegation.

We'll have to fight our way back up to Division 1 next season, but it's on to the World Cup for now.

Post Tour Review:
We kicked off the tour with a brilliant victory over New Zealand, giving us a strong start and an early boost. Unfortunately, this turned out to be the high point, as we then went on to lose our remaining 4 games against Sri Lanka, Australia, England, and Canada. Heading into the final match day, we had an outside chance of survival, but the team couldn’t pull through, resulting in our relegation to Division 2.
Despite this outcome, we’ve spent the last 3 seasons (6 tours) holding our ground in Division 1, an impressive achievement considering we’re one of the smaller teams in this elite tier.
Looking ahead, our focus now turns to the U20 OD World Cup at the end of the season, where we’re determined to finish on a high note in what will be my final time leading the U20 setup.

Re: [U20] Announcements
Today was our opening game of the U20 One Day World Cup, against the UAE. We won the toss in Overcast/Uneven conditions, and elected to bat first. After a frenetic opening four overs, we started to settle in to the rhythym of our innings - steady accumulation, hampered by wickets at vital junctures. In the end, we managed 7/230, roughly 20-30 runs under par for the conditions. Debutant keeper Tanvir Sarkar top scored with 94* off 120 deliveries and looks to be a fixture of the U20 side for some time.
Our quicks got off to a wayward start, going at 6 an over for the first 8 overs before picking up the first wicket. From there, we were to control the scoring to some extent, getting UAE's run rate down to 4, but we were unable to get the regular breakthroughs did. UAE got home with 6 wickets and 2.2 overs to spare. Talha Haque was the pick of the bowlers with 3/51 from his 10 overs, and debutant all-rounder Anil Jilani picked up 1/32 from his 10 overs with the sole maiden of UAE's innings to go with his run-a-ball 30 earlier, batting at 6.
We move on to tomorrow's game against Zimbabwe in Overcast/Green conditions, where hopefully we will be writing about our first win of the tournament.

Re: [U20] Announcements
2nd game vs Zimbabwe on a Green pitch with Overcast conditions expected.
Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bat first.
Zimbabwe started with intent, reaching a commanding 132/1 thanks to T.Harrop’s 92 (100) and G.Llewellyn’s 56 (61). However, Bangladesh’s bowlers struck back hard, led by N.Alam’s superb 5 wicket haul, restricting Zimbabwe to 225 all out in 46.2 overs.
In response, Bangladesh had a slower start, but a crucial 148 run opening stand between S.Srivastav 79 (83) and A.Kamal 73 (116) provided a solid base. Zimbabwe’s bowlers fought back fiercely, taking 8 wickets and slowing Bangladesh’s progress. Bangladesh managed to scrape over the line, reaching 226/8 in 47.5 overs to secure a narrow 2 wicket victory.

Re: [U20] Announcements
This morning was our 3rd game of the tournament, against competition heavyweights Australia. Having picked up a win yesterday, we ideally need to win this game if we want to guarantee finals berth - finishing the group stages on 3 wins will likely put us in a position where our fate is not entirely in our own hands.
We had a Green pitch again with Sunny overhead conditions, which prompted us to bat first after winning the toss. We got off to a shaky start, losing opening bat Manu Vatuvei for 14 when fellow opener Shoaib Shariff was yet to score, and Shariff himself fell for 12 at the end of the 11th over. We then consolidated and were starting to really up the ante when keeper Tanvir Sarkar fell for the eventual top score of 70 off 82 - at this point we were 3/131 at the start of the 27th over, and it looked like a score well in excess of 250 was on the cards.
However, shortly after Sarkar's dismissal we then lost Monish Naik, Ruby Rewcastle and Karanveer Dravid all in quick succession and we were now 6/161 after 34 overs. We still had all-rounder Ravi Dravid and the last specialist batter Polash Wadud at the crease, and they put on a 45 run partnership before both getting out in the same over, leaving us 8/211 with 6.1 overs to go. Luckily the tail wagged, thanks chiefly to quick Subhash Niranjan who made 25* off 22 balls and we made 9/252. A decent total, but 20-30 below what we were expecting around the halfway mark.
Australia started their chase a bit more confidently, not losing a first wicket until Tyrone Naismith departed in the 10th over for 15, leaving them 1/44. From that setback they recovered strongly, not losing their 2nd wicket until the 21st over when Christian Beckley departed for 26 with the score on 2/111. They continued on at around 5 RPO, and with wickets in hand it looked like they were going to be in a strong position to launch from in the death overs.
Opener Keith Kick was the third man out, falling for Australia's top score of 78 off 106 in the 31st over, and keeper Trevor Dutton followed him back to the pavilion for 2 in the following over. The Aussies were now 4/159 after 31.3 overs with the last remaining specialist batters at the crease, but with their run rate right on track. However just a few overs later, things took a turn - captain Will Baker departed for 44, and last recognised batter Riley Bews fell for just 17, both players dismissed by seamer Rishi Patel. Australia had 11.5 overs to score 51 runs, but only 4 wickets remaining - all-rounder Chad Romari left to bat with the tail.
At least in theory Romari would be batting with the tail - in reality, express quick Subhash Niranjan (who had picked up opener Naismith) dismissed both Romari and no. 8 Jack O'Lantern in the same over, with no.10 Brock Coles getting trapped in front by wrist spinner Ravi Dravid in the next over. Australia were 9/217 after 41.2 overs and in spite of a 24 run last wicket partnership, they were not able to get home, no. 9 Andre Cookson getting stumped off finger spinner Shariar Salahuddin. Australia were all out for 241 in 25.2 overs, and we secured victory by 11 runs.
With that result, we're now 1 of 4 teams in group 1 with 2 wins from 3 games, separated only by NRR (Australia, Zimbabwe, us and UAE in that order).

Re: [U20] Announcements
Thanks for the encouragement, Dave.
We've just completed our 4th game of the tournament this afternoon (timezone depending), against South Africa. As I mentioned in yesterday's report, we are 1 of 4 teams that have won 2 of their 3 games, sitting in 3rd position when taking NRR in to account (ours is +0.0584 after 3 games). Given that only the top 2 teams from each group play finals, we ideally need a pair of convincing wins in our last 2 matches in order to guarantee qualification.
With that out of the way, we are playing in Sunny/Green conditions for the 3rd game in a row, and had intended to bat first - so when we lost the toss and South Africa elected to bowl, we were pleasantly surprised. Our start wasn't ideal, losing opener Siddarth Srivastav for 11 in the 5th over, but from there we were able to stabilise the innings and we didn't lose another wicket until his opening partner Shoaib Shariff departed for 43 at the end of the 22nd over. At that point we were 2/105 and in a fairly comfortable position, not losing our 3rd wicket until the 32nd over when eventual top scorer Manu Vatuvei departed for 71, his maiden ODI half century.
From here, the innings started to take a turn for the worse. No. 4 Asif Kamal departed 4 overs lated for 36, and 4 overs after Kamal's departure, all-rounder Anil Jilani nicked off for 4. We were now 5/195 after 39.5 overs, but this did have the updside of bringing our Finisher, Karanveer Dravid to the crease for the slog overs. After a couple overs of acceleration, we lost keeper Rohit Gavaskar for 41 off 40, and all-rounder Ruby Rewcastle for a golden duck. The next 3 overs brought similar results - we up the ante (scoring 24 runs), only for no. 9 Madan Nayak to fall for 15 off 10. We were 8/242 with 4.2 overs remaining, and we made 9/278 from there, with Karanveer Dravid falling late for 31 off 24.
Given the conditions were the same as yesterday's match against Australia, defending a total of 279 seemed a distinct possbility and we got off to a good start, Anil Jilani dismissing opener Salty McLatchey for 5 in the 3rd over. From there, the South Africans began to exert some scoreboard pressure, scoring at close to 6 RPO (chiefly off Anil Jilani), before losing their other opener Kepler de Villiers for 42 off 39 to Talha Haque (more about Talha's efforts in this tournament later). Finger spinner Madan Nayak then picked up no.3 Leonard Eccleston for 24, leaving RSA on 3/84 off 14.4 overs.
From there, we were able to restrict South Africa's scoring appreciably - the next wicket of Germisuys L Oothuizen (31) fell to captain Nazmus Alam's right-arm mediums after 26.5 overs, and in the 12.1 overs between wickets they had scored just 44 runs (4/128). FS Nayak was the chief contributor to the slowdown, ending the match with figures of 8 overs, 1/26 - an impressively economical performance in conditions that actively hampered him. At this point, RSA's captain Jonathan Tichana is joined by keeper Nic Mulder at the crease. The two of them put on a 62 run partnership, before Haque picked up his second wicket, knocking over Mulder for 25.
RSA are now 5-190 off 37/3 overs, so they have 12.3 overs to score 89 runs. Tichana is looking set on 50 off 63 at the time of Mulder's dismissal, and he is joined at the crease by all-rounder Albie Rutherford - the last player (other than Tichana) for RSA with any noteworthy batting ability. From here, the chase is still manageable for RSA as long Tichana goes the distance, but 2 overs later, Rutherford runs himself out for 14. The next over, no.8 Laurens Myburgh is caught off Nazmus Alam for a 4-ball duck, and Xen O'Keefe is caught and bowled by all-rounder Ruby Rewcastle for a golden duck. RSA have now slipped to 8/215 with 8.5 overs remaining, though the captain Tichana is still at the other end.
At least, for 3 more overs - until our best bowler on the day - Talha Haque - has him caught by Shoaib Shariff for 68. No.11 Stefan Barkhuizen was only able to add 1 run before getting caught behind off Alam, leaving no. 10 Rudy Gillingham stranded on 14*. South Africa were dismissed for 237, with 3.1 overs to spare. Haque ended the day with figures of 3/45 from his full allotment, with Nazmus Alam taking 3/46 off his 8.5 overs.
I mentioned Talha's performances earlier - after 4 rounds of the WC, he is the leading wicket taker in the competition, with 10 wickets @ 15.60 from his 3 appearances. He's really cemented his position as our premier quick, and has been ably assisted by equal 3rd highest wicket taker, Nazmus Alam, who has 8 wickets @ 15.62 (also from 3 games).
As for our position in the group, we're now 2nd as one of 3 teams with 3 wins, behind Australia on NRR (ours is +0.2509 to their +0.8538), but ahead of UAE (-0.0342 NRR). Tomorrow, we face a winless Canada side in our final group stage game. Though their bowlers have struggled, they have a strong batting unit and conditions will be appreciably different - we're getting a Slow pitch instead of the 3 consecutive Green tops we've just played on. For qualification, we need a comfortable win to guarantee a spot. A loss is dangerous - Zimbabwe are on 2 wins and an NRR of +0.2002. In this scenario of us losing, if they beat RSA in their final game, they will pass us and the other finals spot will be decided by the winner of Australia v UAE.

Re: [U20] Announcements
5th game vs Canada on a Slow pitch with Sunny conditions expected.
Canada won the toss and elected to bowl first.
Bangladesh’s innings began disastrously, losing opener S.Srivastav in the first over, followed by regular setbacks as they slumped to 117/6 in 32 overs. A gritty 66 (90) by R.Dravid and a counterattacking 62 (57) from M.Nayak provided some stability, dragging Bangladesh to a total of 230/9 in 50 overs. Despite their fightback, the score appeared 10–20 runs below par on a slow pitch.
Canada’s chase started cautiously, with early contributions from H.Francis 45 (66) and J.Steele 31 (48). However, it was D.Olsen’s composed 76* (80) that anchored the innings. A quick-fire 39 (42) from A.Roach added momentum, despite late wickets offering Bangladesh a glimmer of hope. Canada reached the target with 4 wickets in hand, finishing on 231/6 in 48.5 overs to secure the win.

Re: [U20] Announcements
Thanks for the kind words, wmchamps.
We've made it to the semi-finals, and today we take on Scotland, the top team from group 2 on a Dry pitch in Sunny overhead conditions. The pitch was a bit of a surprise, considering we'd had 4 pace friendly wickets and one Dry pitch in the group stage matches, but ultimately advantageous - Scotland only had 2 finger spinners in their squad, where we have an additional wrist spinner.
Scotland lost the toss, and we sent them in to bowl - a decision that paid off very quickly, with RFM Talha Haque picking up Hamish Fogarty-Spooge for 13 and Finlay Fairbairn for 8 off his 2nd and 3rd overs respectively, leaving the Scots 2/33 after 6 overs. After a brief partnership between Alistair Burns and skipper Torgeir Dalglish, the spinners made their presence felt - off spinner Madan Nayak had Burns caught in the deep for 15, and leg spinner Ravi Dravid removed no. 5 Martin Gemmill for 1 off 5 with his first ball of the day. By the end of the over, the Scots were in disarray at 4/58.
Things started to change from here - wicketkeeper & spin specialist Grant Fraser entered at no.6, and together with Dalgleish they put last past the drinks break and put on a 53-run partnership. It wasn't until Talha Haque (who else) returned in the 31st over that the partnership ended, trapping Fraser in front for 23 off 55, with the score on 5/112. Batting at 7 was finisher Daryl Mitchell, Scotland's last recognised batter, and he and Dalglish looked to finally get their run rate back above 4 again. It worked for a while, only for Ravi Dravid to dismiss both batsmen in the 38th over, leaving the Scots 7/145 with 12 overs to go.
From here, however, Scotland were able to regain some of the ascendancy. Nos 8 & 9 Andrew Aitken & Ninian Goram were able to put on 51 for the 8th wicket before Aitken fell to skipper Shariar Salahuddin's offbreaks for 23, and Scotland ended their innings on 8/202. Not a massive total, but on a tough pitch with fatiguing players, certainly enough to give their bowlers something to work with.
Our innings could not have started much worse - opener Siddarth Srivastav fell to seamer Andrew Aitken off the first ball, and Shoaib Shariff fell for a 3-ball duck in the following over to express quick David Hadley. Now, a little peek behind the curtain of the management team. As you could imagine, myself, Dave, wmchamps and our new assistant grizzlybackere were all quite concerned at this very shaky start. At this moment, I messaged the boys, jokingly saying "it's fine, it just means we'll win by 8 wickets instead of 10".
After a few overs of consolidation, keeper Tanvir Sarkar and no.4 Asif Kamal got us back up to the required run rate of 4 RPO and were looking steady. Finger spinner Ninian Goram came on to bowl his second over, the 12th of the innings - and with his second ball, opposing keeper Grant Fraser dropped Sarkar on 25 (at this point we're 2/52 off 13 overs). The next over, they brought up the 50 partnership and began to look increasingly comfortable - the 100 partnership was brought up just 10 overs later. At the drinks break, we were 2/115 with Kamal on 63 off 77 and Sarkar on 47 off 72, and we were starting to feel relatively confident.
7 balls later, Sarkar brought up his 50, and we proceeded to steadily increase the run rate from then on. Kamal brought up his first ODI century in the 37th overs, at which point we were 2/185, needing just 18 runs off the remaining 13 overs. 2.4 overs later and the boys had done it - we'd won by 8 wickets and secured a spot in the finals against Australia (who saw off NZ by 8 runs).

U20 OD WC Final vs Australia on a Hard pitch with Hot conditions expected.
Australia won the toss and elected to bat first.
Australia put up a commanding performance with the bat after electing to bat first, posting a competitive 328/10 in 49 overs. Contributions from the middle order proved pivotal, with A.Maddox smashing a brilliant 90 off 61 balls, supported by K.Kick 67 (70) and quick cameos from A.Cookson 29 (18) & C.Beckley 32 (31). Bangladesh’s R.Dravid (3/29) and N.Alam (3/53) managed to apply some brakes, but the hosts still managed a formidable score.
In response, Bangladesh started aggressively with M.Vatuvei 58 (46) and S.Shariff 87 (81) leading the charge. However, regular wickets after Shariff’s dismissal at 167/3 derailed the chase. Late cameos from A.Jilani 29 (20) and K.Dravid 28 (23) kept Bangladesh in the hunt, but a disciplined effort from Australia’s G.Bailiff (4/47) and B.Minton (3/59) ensured the visitors were bowled out for 294 in 48.3 overs.
For Bangladesh, it was another heartbreak in the Finals, but their spirited performance throughout the tournament won admiration. As the Aussie players celebrated in front of a jubilant crowd, it was a reminder of the relentless pursuit of excellence that defines champions.

Fantastic effort to make another WC final.
Thanks for all your efforts, Dave, over the past two terms. Lots of success on the pitch, but also a big impact off it.
